Building Handcrafted Electric and Acoustic Stringed Instruments

Guitars by John C. Olvera

Custom designed and handcrafted stringed instruments by John C. Olvera are for the discriminating professional musician. Primarily, I build one-of-a-kind electric and acoustic custom guitars and basses. I also build stringed folk instruments such as dulcimers, charangos, and electric mandolins. Each instrument is unique for the individual client and these instruments are not replicated for another.

If you are ordering a custom instrument, it should be specifically designed for you. Not just the choices of woods or finishes, but the entire design of the instrument must be uniquely yours. It will be the one you would make for yourself, given the time, the tools, and the know-how. Making to commission only, I can work from your original design specifications, or from plans or photographs of existing instruments. Delivery time is dependent on current orders and pending services and repairs, but is generally between three and four months.

While I do build two "standard" instrument series, the "Alice Series" and the "Classic Series" these are not what I consider truly "custom" guitars. The "Alice Series" are based on the design concept for my personal guitar to fit my playing style and technique. The "Classic Series" is in response to clients desiring an instrument similar in style to mainline production instruments but "customized" to bridge the gap between those models and a true custom instrument. The "Alice Series" and the "Classic Series" are replicated in varying electronic platforms and esthetic detailing. Inquiries are always welcomed. All work is undertaken after consultation and guaranteed. Visits are by appointment only.

Carving the Neck Profile

A bit about this site! The instruments depicted on the next three pages are recently completed commissions and serve to show examples of the scope and quality of instruments I build.

The following page, "Guitars", specifies in detail the hardware, woods, and electronics typical of my instruments. Guitars" (pages 2 & 3) show overalls views of selected instruments and general appointments.

The "Custom" page outlines the custom guitar design process wherein we work as a team to develop your instrument. "Ordering" provides detail regarding any of my instruments; a Custom, an Alice Series, or a Classic Series.

See the "Services" page for more depth regarding repair and maintenance of your string instrument.

The "NEWS" page provides information about the "Electric Guitar Circuit Control and Switching Module" U.S. Patent No. 6, 781,050 B2.

The "Tips" page may help you perform periodic maintenance and setup of your current instrument. I'll try to change it once a month.

Any practical design can be made to your specifications to yield a truly professional quality instrument.
